Fireballs for Family Day

Family Day coincided with the beginning of Reading Week for the girls, which gave us a couple of rare opportunities.

The first was a family breakfast - most weekends see Glory working at Hathaways Diner, serving brunch. What a treat to get to serve her one instead! Everyone enjoyed hashbrowns fried in duck fat, crispy bacon, and waffles with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream.

After a quiet afternoon and a reheated supper, we all partook in bread pudding with whiskey sauce (and still more whipped cream) and then retired to the basement for a game of Fireball Island.

I Kickstarted this game years ago, and like so many games I own, it doesn't get played nearly often enough. Part of the reason is it is kind of fiddly and takes a while to set up. I also bought both expansions at the launch: Wreck of the Crimson Cutlass, The Last Adventurer, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Bees. Then I got another expansion the Christmas before last, Spider Spring Island, but it has stayed in the shrink wrap until tonight.

Given how rare it is for the four of us get to play a longer boardgame in general, and Fireball Island i particular, I threw caution to the wind and set up every expansion.

FI is not a complex game, but that many moving pieces stretched out the obligatory rules recap considerably, and I still managed to overlook a couple of key points.

Luckily, the family was patient, and we ended up having great time racing around a plastic island, collecting treasures and hurling fireballs, cannonballs, bees, snakes and boulders at one another.

There is even a supporting app now that adds sound effects and corny pronouncements from Vul-Kar himself.

I won, but all of us managed to get off the island, half on the new submarine that docks on the peninsula containing Spider Springs. Too bad we never figured out how to work the spider-launcher itsel-  oh, wait, that marble is supposed to drop on the button...

Maybe we can try again during Reading Week?
